‘Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.’
– Albert Einsten

One of the most exciting moments in life is that ah-ha moment when you finally realise your life’s purpose or as pop-psychology calls it, you have discovered your bliss. Countless hours have been spent dreaming and planning, you’re ready to take action, and you decide to share your dreams with your family and friends. Unfortunately, your exciting plans are met with fear, doubt and harsh criticism. It’s incredibly difficult to pursue your dreams when the people you have always trusted and admired are opposed to you following your dreams. Why is doubt and opposition, the reception for our dreams? How do you continue to pursue your dreams, in the face of opposition, without compromising your passions?

The Good News:

This is normal, actually be worried if you do not experience opposition, and start seeing their doubts and negative comments as a sign that you’re on the right path. The most successful people have faced opposition when starting out. Doubt, opposition and harsh criticism can be either a huge motivator or can tear your dreams apart; these comments are a test. Are you passionate enough to pursue your dreams through hardship? Do you want your dreams badly enough to continue on? Only you decide whether you pass or fail the test of opposition.

Why?

It’s important to realise that your family and friends may have their own ideas of how your life should look. Their ideas come from a place of love and a desire to see you living a fulfilled life; it’s also worth noting, these ideas come from their own personal experiences ‘this made me happy and, therefore, should make you happy as well’.  Despite all of their good intentions, It’s your life and you need to be following your bliss, not anyone else’s. Your dream or life goals are not subject to the approval of others. Unfortunately, I learned this lesson the hard way, I spent many years living a life according to the expectations of the well-meaning people who surrounded me and unfortunately, I reached the age of 27 feeling extremely unhappy; however, this unhappiness motivated me to start living my life on my own terms. You are the only one who has the passion for your life vision and that’s why most people will not understand why you are choosing this path, or even call you crazy.

Tips to keep you going through times of hardship.

Often in these moments, motivation can be in short supply. Here are 3 tips that inspire me to pursue my dreams, when I am faced with doubters.

1. Know the why behind everything you do.

Knowing why you are pursuing a certain dream or life goal, is a great motivator during times of opposition. It reminds you of what’s at stake and reminds you of a higher purpose. I discovered my life’s purpose through reading Jack Canfield‘s book, The Success Principles. In his book, the second principle, be clear why you’re here, takes it reads through a short exercise in discovering your life’s purpose. Write down your life’s purpose mission statement, place it at eye level, in your office, in your bedroom so you can read it first thing in the morning or wherever you see it and be inspired.

‘Decide upon your major definite purpose in life and then organise all your activities around it.’
– Brian Tracy

2. Positive affirmations.

Constantly repeating positive affirmations will have a major effect upon your life. In fact, constantly repeating affirmations, both good or bad, has contributed to the beliefs you hold today. The unconscious mind cannot tell the difference between reality or imagination, it responds to the suggestions you give it. When you repeat positive affirmations you are training your mind to create a reality that is in line with your dreams and life goals. Positive affirmations align you with your life purpose and also lift your spirits in times of opposition.

‘An Affirmation opens the door. It’s a beginning point on the path to change.’
– Louise Hay

3. Have a plan of action.

Developing a plan of action not only enables you to achieve your goals, but also reminds you in moments of opposition, that your dreams are achievable and realistic, and serves as an extinguisher to any harsh criticism or opposition.

Dream big! Understand the why behind your dream, use positive affirmations and have a plan of action and when in doubt, just smile and thank them for their input. Above all else do not compromise your dreams and find a way to allow opposition to spur you along instead of tearing you down. How do you cope with harsh criticism? Let me know by using the comments box below. I’d love to hear from you.
