Have you ever noticed how the feeling you get when you are just out of your comfort zone is similar to the feeling when your gut instinct is telling you not to do something? For me, they both feel like butterflies. So, how do you tell the difference?
Fear is highly emotional charged and has a sense of urgency. It is not necessarily a bad thing to feel fear or confusion. Fear is an indicator that tells you to pay attention. There are many different types of fear, fear of failure, and fear of the unknown, just to name a few; these fears are not necessarily bad, but you do need to pay attention and not let a sense of fear control or be the driving influence behind your actions. Intuition at its purist will very rarely steer you wrong. Psychology tells us that intuition gives us the ability to know something directly without reasoning; it bridges the gap between the conscious and non-conscious parts of our mind, as well as between instinct and reason.
I have two strategies today to help you differentiate between fear and intuition. The first one is this; there is a question you can ask yourself to tap into your intuition. Everyone has an intuition or a natural knowing it’s innate. When you think about the decision or course of action you are about to take and feel conflicted and are in a state of limbo between ‘I’m too scared to do this’ and ‘I shouldn’t do this’. Ask yourself these simple questions, how do you really feel? Deep down do you feel free, excited, or open to possibilities? Or deep down do you feel caged in, or a sense of dread, like ‘don’t make me do this’? If the feeling you get deep down behind the confusion is a negative caged in feeling, then that is your intuition telling you to stay away. However, if the feeling you get deep down is a feeling of freedom or excitement but with fear or confusion, then that is the feeling of being out of your comfort zone.
As a life coach, I love to watch people talk about their upcoming projects; I simply sit back and watch their body language, the body never lies. When people talk about something they believe that they should not do, they start to look a little off or pasty, look depressed, their posture sinks in like they’re lacking self-confidence. When people talk about an idea or opportunity that they are genuinely excited about or they should do, even if it scares them, their faces light up, their shoulders are back like a person who is full of confidence; which leads me to the second strategy. Here’s how you implement can this, talk the course of action or ideas that you are not sure about over with a some good friends and have them to really pay attention, not just to your words but to your face and body language. Obviously, it is crucial that your friends are people whom you trust and are honest. If you talk this through with them based purely upon your facial and body language reactions, they will be able to tell you if this is something you should pursue or not. Steve Jobs once said ‘have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become.’
