The other day I posted my usual Monday motivational tip in my Facebook Group, I was talking about how I realised I needed to work on my money mindset. In this post, I also shared tips on how to use affirmations to change your money mindset that really worked for me, but I did skip over the exact process on how to figure out if this is something you need to work on. I chose to skip over this for a number of reasons, it was an issue of word count and over the years of doing mindset work it was obvious to me and I made the assumption that no content creator should ever and, and that was my audience already knew what I knew. I shared the post and hung out on Facebook for a few moments, and then I had a notification pop up. It was a reply from a reader. The message was a simple question: how do you know if you need to work on your mindset?
I quickly replied back to her and shared a quick tip, and I started looking for an article online that would give her more detail, and that’s when I realised something quite scary. Every blogger, coach, or guru has talked about how to change your mindset at some point, but no-one goes into great detail on how to recognise the warning signs. So, in this blog, I’m going to share with you three simple questions that will help you recognise the elements of your mindset that need to change. Before I dive into the questions I want to point out that everyone needs to work on their mindset because you will never reach a point where you have arrived with a perfectly positive mindset.
I realise that in the last blog post I mentioned that I was going to discuss, how to create a signature system but I really felt that it was important to interrupt my regular blogging schedule to talk about how to know If you need to work on your mindset because it’s such an important topic and aspect of entrepreneurship because, if you’re not sold on you, then no one else will be or will buy from you.
Are you uncomfortable with spending a lot of money on yourself?
We often use a lack of finances as an excuse to not invest in yourself. I know what you’re thinking ‘but, I’ve only got £10 in my bank account, and I can’t afford to buy that coaching programme’. If you ever find yourself using this excuse, pause and think about what you are saying. This is evidence of a scarcity mindset because your point of view is this is all I’ve got and is excluding options to make more money; it’s almost like you’re saying ‘I’ve only got £10 and I can’t make any more.’
If ‘I can’t afford that‘ has taken up permanent residence is your vocabulary then I want you to create an affirmation for this mindset. So, take this mindset of I don’t have enough money or I can’t afford it and turn it into it’s opposite, which should be a positive statement such as, ‘I can afford that’ or something positive that you would prefer to believe such as, ‘I always have more than enough money for all my desires.’
As a coach, I’ve witnessed the ability of people to be incredibly resourceful and really find creative ways to make things happen. So, while you are working on improving this element of your mindset, I highly recommend taking action, because experiences that are aligned with these new beliefs will help your mind create new reference points which will help anchor a new belief. As you work on your mindset, I want you to start brainstorming as many legal ways as you can think of to earn more money, so you can invest in yourself.
How do you react in a crisis?
What do you do when your coaching programme doesn’t sell the way you hope? Or, what do you do when people tell you off for play too big in business? Trust me people will say shit like that to you. When no-one responds to your post or watches your videos do you give up or keep going? Do you stop playing big, stop promoting your programme, stop making videos, and fall into a pit of despair? I know this sounds overdramatic, but if your default reaction is negative or too give up then this is a massive warning sign that you need to change your mindset. This negative reaction, which I would like to add is totally understandable but isn’t serving you.
You don’t need to be a newbie to the entrepreneurial world to suffer from this. I recently allowed a handful of people who I don’t know and who are not my target audience dictate to me how I should show up and be visible online. Ridiculous, right! But, there is a part of me that doesn’t totally believe in the value of my content or that fact that my target market desperately needs to hear my message and read my content. So, this is what I’m working on, being totally sold on me and truly believing in my ideal clients need to hear my message. Here are few of the affirmations I’ve included in my mindset routine, which I repeat 3 to 5 times a day, it’s been a few weeks and it’s already had a massive impact on the way I show up in business.
- The content I create is valuable and improves the lives of my ideal clients.
- My ideal clients desperately need to hear my message and read my content because it helps them to create the business and life of their dreams.
- I believe in the value I create in the lives of others through my business offerings and services.
But, I’m not just repeating affirmations to myself, I’m also showing up more on social media and playing bigger. I’m creating content exclusively for my clients and I’m not hiding it in fear of being spammy, because, in order to be spammy, my content needs to be low value and essentially clickbait.
As you work on your mindset and being sold on you, I want you to start being more visible on social media. If Facebook is your main platform like me, I want you to show up in 3 to 5 Facebook groups and share your value 3 times a day; you might want to share two posts, and focus on connecting with your ideal clients the third time. Share your content, connect with others, ask questions or answer questions.
What are you saying to yourself?
The answer to this last question is to do with one of the most obvious signs that you need to work on your mindset, and that is; negative self-talk. Sometimes we don’t really pay attention to the types of things that we tell ourselves, and on the surface, they may actually seem to be not that bad. Do you catch yourself putting off something because you’re not an expert, yet? Or, I can’t start that YouTube channel because I’m not great on camera.
Most people aren’t even aware of their negative self-talk. If this is you, everyone has been where you are and the first step is self-awareness.
1. The first step to changing your negative self-talk is to pay attention to what you are saying to yourself on a regular basis. This is going to seem like a weird tip but, carry a notebook around with you and write down all of the negative things you say to yourself. As you begin to do this exercise you will notice that you say the same things over and over again, instead of writing the same thing down just keep a tally of how many times you say something.
2. The next step is to turn this negative self-talk into a positive affirmation, which is what you desire to believe about yourself. For example, there was a while where I kept making excuses as to why I couldn’t create a YouTube channel and I was convinced I wasn’t great in front of the camera, so I created a series of positive affirmations to help affirm my new belief. Here are a few examples of the affirmations I used below:
- I can talk easily and effortlessly in front of a video camera with only a few bulleted points outlined beforehand.
- I can prepare, film, and edit 4 videos every Tuesday with ease.
- I am confident and feel comfortable when I am filming videos for my youtube channel.
- I am great when I film videos off the cuff.
- I trust myself to say the right thing in the right way without preparation.
3. The last step is to take actionable steps which help you have a new experience that is aligned with your new belief. For the sake of consistency, let’s stick with the I’m not great in front of the camera self-talk example shown above. After I created the affirmations and incorporated them into my morning routine and repeated them three to five times a day, I started to film my BeMotivated TV unscripted videos, and now talking in front of the camera is not a problem anymore, I’m no longer scared and I can film four 10 minute videos in about 90 minutes.
