Unless you have a superhuman ability to ward off any disease, then illness is an obstacle you’re going to face as an entrepreneur. I know what it’s like to suffer from a disease and run a business at the same time. You feel like you just want to curl up and die. I know that’s a tad dramatic but that’s how I felt. When relaunched my business I ended up in the emergency room diagnosed with Infectious Mononucleosis. I had to slow down and listen to my body and take my time with relaunching my business. As I’m writing this blog post, I’m recovering from a chest infection that has lasted over 12 days. These experiences were less than ideal. I’ve learned so much about how to manage a business when you’re sick without running myself into the ground because of these experiences. So, how do I do it?
What is most important to you?
Before I dive into how to manage your business when you’re sick, I want to discuss a topic I used to roll my eyes at. When I started out as a business strategist, I noticed everyone was talking about self-care. I thought it was ridiculous. I thought, ‘who needs to be reminded to look after yourself?’ I do. Self-care is more than just pamper yourself and take time out for you. It’s a form of self-leadership. At its core is the principle ‘you need to look after yourself before you can look after everyone else.
As women, this isn’t something we do well. We believe to be a great wife, mother, friend, or entrepreneur we need to put everyone else before ourselves. This is almost like a form of martyrdom. To be the best version of yourself and have an impact on this world, you need to get your priorities in order. That’s exactly what I did when I was first diagnosed with Infectious Mononucleosis. It turns out that my business is actually on the number 3 or 4 spot on my list or priorities. My relationship with Roland, my family and myself need to come before my business. If these core relationships fall apart they will distract me from my business. I would not be able to show up as the best possible version of myself. Before you continue to read the tips below, I want you to take a few moments to get clear on your priorities.
3 Tips to managing business when you’re sick
In this blog post, I’ll share with you, my top three tips for how to manage a business when you’re sick.
1. Listen to your body
How do you feel when you wake up in the morning when you feel sick? I find it difficult to wake up. I feel like I need more sleep, and that’s exactly what I do, I give my body what it needs. I let myself sleep in. I usually allow myself to sleep until 10:00 am or 11:00 am. I have breakfast and do my mindset work before, I start my day at midday.
I know no everyone who reads my blog is a full-time entrepreneur. If you’re balancing a nine to five and creating your dream business you most likely work on your business in the evenings and on weekends. I recommend allowing yourself to sleep in over the weekend and starting work later. In the evenings, I recommend listening to your body. Take the time to decide whether you have the energy to work or if going to bed early would be more beneficial and help you recover. You need to do what’s best for you, but if you can squeeze in an hour of work then that’s great too.
2. Know your limitations!
I know I usually talk about how you have no limitations in business but sometimes an illness can stop you from doing something in your business. I usually batch my content but, I got a chest infection the week I usually create my content. I had lost my voice and it didn’t recover for the next 10 days. This loss of voice meant I couldn’t film any videos or record any podcast episodes. I also had to put off my plans to start live streaming in my VIP Group, Create Your Dream Biz Tribe. I continued to create my content in batches as usual but I did the tasks that I was able to do. To help me stay on track, I created a to-do list. I left the tasks I couldn’t do on the list as a reminder to make them a priority when I recovered.
3. Write your ideas down.
I don’t like to start anything new in my business when I’m travelling or feel sick. Creating something new requires a lot of planning and preparation. When I’m sick is I usually come up with great ideas that are often forgotten. After, forgetting some potentially great ideas, I started to write down my ideas. I would take the note taking a bit further than recording it. I would flesh out the idea a little further and write down a few bulleted points. I would then set myself a reminder to take action in the future. I create my content, marketing copy and anything else I need to write down for my business in Evernote. It’s a great programme that allows you to set reminders on the notes you create. I use this feature to remind myself to take action with the ideas I come up with.
You can manage your business while you’re sick without running yourself into the ground. You need to listen to your body. It’s important to figure out your limitations, write your ideas down and not take on any new projects. Self-care is so important. To build your dream business and make the impact on the world you desire, you need to be the best possible version of yourself. This all starts with putting you and your priorities before your business.
