Do you secretly dream of changing your career or living a different lifestyle or meeting a life partner? Have you been putting off a goal or dream because it seems impossible to achieve? Pursuing your dreams can be exciting, but if you do not know where to start, the experience can be as equally daunting. I spend the majority of my time listening to people, explain to me, why they will never achieve their dreams. The reasoning is logical and firmly embedded in their minds; economic status, education and skill are just some of the reasons why people believe, they will never be successful or achieve their goals; these so-called obstacles are within our power to change. This is the very reason why my blog exists, to ensure that people realise their full potential; You can achieve your goals and dreams! These 5 tips will ensure you are well on your way to achieving your goals and dreams.
1. Learn from Like Minded People.
Having all the skills to achieve your goals or dreams is not a prerequisite for success, networking and surrounding yourself with individuals who possess certain skills will ensure your success, but so many people believe that you need to have exceptional business skills or possess a certain personality type, but these things can be learned. Some of the most success people surround themselves with individuals who possess certain skills they lack and are key to fulfilling their dream. They see the value in bringing others on board.
One of the most powerful exercises you can undertake, is to ask yourself: How did other people achieve the same goals? Discovering how other people have achieved like-minded goals, is a radical mindset change. Fortunately, very rarely is a goal or an idea, new. There are people who have paved the way, spent countless hours achieving goals and getting the results, you want. The most successful people, enjoy talking about how they achieved their dreams and are happy to share strategies. Learn from the people around you, or those who have achieved like-minded goals, take their strategies, implement, tweak and make them your own.
2. Create an action plan:
Jack Canfield, the author of The Success Principles, proposed, we should take immediate action and develop a plan. Why is immediate action necessary? An immediate action leaves very little room for self-doubt and fear; by the time you experience self-doubt or fear, it’s immediately overridden by your commitment to action and evidence of small success. The Team at any.do, a productivity application, discovered that if a goal was not actioned within the first 6 weeks, the probability of the goal ever being achieved drops off drastically.
One of the most important questions you can ask yourself is: What are the first 5 steps to achieving your goal? By breaking down your goals into bite-sized chunks, eliminates overwhelming feelings that come with huge goals and forms a habit of looking ahead to the next tasks and focusing upon your goals.
3. Take up the 30-day challenge.
What is the 30-day challenge? I discovered the 30-day challenge through, Ted Talks. In the 3 minute video, Matt Cutts, poses a question to his audience: Is there something you’ve always meant to do, wanted to do, but just haven’t? After being stuck in a rut, Matt decided to try something new for 30 days. The challenge has many benefits, including self-confidence. Making these small sustainable changes are most likely to stick.
I want you to think about your goal. Write it down and place it at eye level on your mirror or at your desk, at a location where you spend most of your time. What is one thing, you can consistently do for 30 days, that will bring you closer to achieving your goal? Perhaps, you what to meet a life partner; make a goal that you will talk to 3 new men or women who you find attractive, every day for 30 days. Do you dream of being a writer? Build a blog on WordPress or blogger, choose a niche topic, and write a post every day for 30 days.
4. Never give up.
The British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill proposed that you should never give up on something you cannot go a day without thinking about. Unfortunately, not every action you take will be successful. The majority of successful individuals will experience several failed attempts, before achieving a goal. Donald Trump has filed for corporate bankruptcy four times; think about it for a second, Donald Trump has seen his dream of a business empire crumble four times but has gone on to rebuild and pursue his dreams. Why was he able to rebuild and keep going, when so many others cannot? The answer is twofold; he had the knowledge and experience of building a business empire and he had a different perspective.
A pessimist will only see the difficulty in every opportunity, whereas, an optimist, will see an opportunity in every circumstance. An optimistic outlook will enable you to see opportunities, that most people will not. Why? When you are pessimistic your mind is focused upon possible worst case scenarios and closed to any existing opportunities. See failure as an opportunity to learn and better yourself. The lessons you learn today will shape, the person you are tomorrow.
Never give up, always be prepared to try another angle; failure is not an end but a beginning.
5. Document the process.
Goal setting, planning and implementing action, can be a daunting experience, the majority of people give into this feeling of despair and give up too soon. They convince themselves, ‘I’m getting nowhere with this’, they through in the towel, at a time when they are actually making progress. Progress does not always come in huge noticeable pieces, more often than not, progress is small and is achieved piece by piece. One of the most powerful exercises you can perform is to document the process. Keep a daily journal or a video diary and document all of your successes and failures, in moments of doubt these resources become of critical importance and inspire you to continue on your path. Science has taught us the value in documentation, Albert Einstein, documented many of his experiments in journals and most likely, played a key role inspiring him to continue on in times of adversity.
It’s easy to feel discouraged along the way to achieving your goals and dreams, remember, failure is a beginning and it can be temporary, but you have the power to choose, to keep striving towards your goals.
